CHAPTER TWENTY

Almost nervously, I sit down in the Lazyboy, and pull back on the handle on the side, until I’m slightly reclined.

“So,” I start. “Lucifer?”

He nods. “Lucifer. So, where do I start?”

“From the beginning?” I suggest.

He shakes his head. “That would be going too far back. Let’s start with him coming to this world. Lucifer came here through one of the Demon Gates. After he became a fallen Angel, on Earth, he was moved to a Demon world, where he worked as a Devil.”

“I knew it!” I tell him, snapping my fingers. “I figure that was what happened. So, what is a Devil?”

“A Devil is someone who runs a Demon World. There is usually one Devil for every Demon world. Usually, and we don’t admit this, but it’s given usually to an Angel who has fucked up so badly, but not badly enough to be decommissioned,” Peter says with a shrug.

“Decommissioned?” I ask, puzzled at the term used to talk about a person.

“You forgot, unlike you, most Angels are made by god. We aren’t born like you. You’re different in that regard as well.”

“So, what did Lucifer do that was so bad that warranted him getting that job?”

“Well, after he fell out of god’s grace, he tried to take over Earth for his own reasons. God took exception and so demoted him to Devil. And apparently, he did not like that. He has been fighting us for eons.”

“Can’t God… I don’t know… remove him? Or even decommission him?”

Peter shakes his head. “No. And the reason is free will. We might be Angels, but God believes in free will, even for us—except when it comes to doing our job. God isn’t omnipresent or omniscient, as me being here proves. Otherwise, he would know I’m seeing you secretly.”

“How come you have to hide that from him?”

Peter stares at me as if contemplating telling me something. Finally, he comes to a decision and nods firmly. “I’ve been an Angel for so long, that I don’t even remember my first day. I have always been God’s best manager of his worlds. But,” and here he sighs, “we don’t always see eye to eye. The main bone of contention I have with God is about Lucifer.”

“What about him?” I ask.

“Lucifer has free will, yes. But at what cost? He was sent down to a Demon world and was meant to watch over it.” Peter purses his lips. “He has been gone from that world now, for over 10,000 years.”

I frown at that, looking down at my hands in my lap. Something about that tickles my memory. When it comes to me, I look up at Peter quickly. “The Portal!” I blurt out. “From the first Demon attack!”

“I knew you were more than just a pretty face,” Peter says with a grin, but then he loses the grin, a serious look coming over his face. “But basically, that is correct. Lucifer somehow snuck through the Portal, from the Demon world he was supposed to be watching, onto this world.
